Palm Springs, CA – The Pinnacle Fund, The Foundation for Palm Springs Unified School District,
presented $15,000 to teachers whose thirteen grant proposals had been accepted for the Fund’s
2011-2012 Dr. Lorri S. McCune Classroom Grant Program at the Tuesday, January 24th meeting of
the District Board.

The largest grants of approximately $2,500 each regarding the Fund’s focus for “Putting Arts and
Technology Back in the Classroom,” in the Collaborative Grant Category was presented to
Cahuilla Elementary School for a student response system supporting technology and learning
that provides a variety of interactive assessment opportunities; Cathedral City High School Bands
for a three-day artist-in-residence program culminating with a live performance at Walt Disney
Concert Hall in Los Angeles; and Nellie Coffman Middle School for a school enrichment activity
garden as well as a philanthropic component.

Five grants of around $1,000 each in the School-Site Grant Category were given to Cabot Yerxa
Elementary School, Desert Hot Springs High School (2 grants), Palm Springs High School and
Raymond Cree Middle School. These grants focus on performing and visual art projects and
media enrichment.

In the Teacher/Classroom Mini-Grant Category, five grants of approximately $500 each were
awarded to Cielo Vista Charter Elementary School, Katherine Finchy Elementary School, Painted
Hills Middle School, Palm Springs High School and Raymond Cree Middle School. Grants in this
category include collaborative learning projects as well as theatre and music programs.

This brings the total monies awarded by The Pinnacle Fund’s Classroom Grant Program to over
$81,000 during the last four years. In addition, The Pinnacle Fund has acted as a partner in
specific foundation grants targeted for individual schools totaling $95,000 to date, given $4,200
in technology prizes to District schools, and presented $2,600 to the District’s Visual and
Performing Arts Specialist as part of the Fund’s “Get on the Bus” Initiative for transporting
students to area art events.

Putting Arts Back in the Classroom

The Pinnacle Fund partnerships with the McCallum Theatre Institute, the Palm Springs Art Museum and The Steinway Society of Riverside County and the Coachella Valley will bring the Visual and Performing Arts back into all the classrooms of the District’s students.

Putting Technology Back in the Classroom

The Pinnacle Fund’s goal to fund iPads for all District 9th Grade Earth Science students will place technology at their fingertips. Data from a recent three-year PSUSD laptop pilot program demonstrated improved student achievement, attendance and discipline for students ranging from the Gifted and Talented program to those performing below grade level. The move to cost effective iPads is now part of the District’s strategic plan.
